EXCLUSIVE: Generation C, a doc series from Emmy-winning journalist Nelufar Hedayat about a subset of Gen Z, has landed at Espresso Media International. This comes ahead of an official launch at Sunny Side of the Doc in La Rochelle, France, later this month.

Spanning five countries in five continents, the series explores ‘Generation C’, a subset of Gen Z born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s. It tells stories of resilience, reinvention and hope following the Covid-19 pandemic, asking who this group of people are becoming and how they will shape the future.

Show comes from Storyfire and Regen A.B., with Andrew Carter and Johan Skog the series director. Carter is known for films for the BBC and Channel 4, while Skog is a multidisciplinary director whose films often similar themes to Generation C.

Hedayat was born in Afghanistan and raised in the UK as a refugee. She’s primarily centered her reporting on amplifying marginalized voices, and as fronted Ruhi Hamid’s BBC Three doc Women, Weddings, War and Me and Music, Money and Hip Hop Honeys for the same UK channel. She was awarded an Emmy for Scripps News doc In Real Life: Plastic Time Bomb in 2023.

“When we started with Generation C our aim was to capture the many ways in which the pandemic fundamentally changed the life paths of young people around the world,” said Carter. “However, as time has gone on, I’ve realised the project is much more than this. It’s also a handbook for how we as humankind can navigate future global crises, many of which are already upon us. Instead of looking to our elders for guidance, we’re turning to young people, to ask what we can learn from them. It seems even more relevant today than when we began.”

“We are very proud to represent this innovative new series taking a deep dive into the aspirations and challenges for Gen C,” said David Hooper, Managing Director of UK-based distributor Espresso. “We believe this series will find great homes across linear TV and streaming platforms worldwide.”

The series will launch at doc market Sunny Side, which is being held on June 23-26.
