“Tell me your story,” the man says.

“My story?” the gruff voice responds. “400 years ago, I asked a priest for God to spare my wife.

“He did not.”

Here’s the first trailer for Dracula, BAFTA and César Award winner Luc Besson’s take on the classic tale starring Caleb Landry Jones as the legendary vampire. Watch it above.

Back in the 15th century, Prince Vladimir (Jones) denied God after the brutal and cruel loss of his wife. He then inherits a curse: eternal life. He becomes Dracula. Condemned to wander through the centuries, he has only one hope: that of finding his lost love.

“Tell your god my life no longer belongs to him,” Dracula intones.

Flash-forward four centuries, and he believes that he’s found her. “It’s my salvation,” Drac says.

“No,” he’s told, “you are her damnation.”

The also features Christoph Waltz as the Priest, Matilda De Angelis as Maria and Zoë Bleu Sidel as Elisabeta.

Besson also wrote the screenplay based on Bram Stoker’s timeless — immortal? — novel. The pic reunites the veteran French filmmaker with his Dogman star Jones. As Besson told Deadline last year, his interest in the new movie wasn’t spurred by any particular interest in the Dracula tale but rather his lead actor’s appeal.

“It’s not Dracula, my fascination is Caleb,” he said in the interview. “We were just chatting about other roles that could work for him. I said, ‘You’d be great as Dracula.’ Then, I thought, ‘You know what, I’m just going to write it.”

The film hits Gallic cinemas on July 30 via SND.
