Bryce Dallas Howard opened up about some of her past films that didn’t do well at the box office.
In a new interview, the Jurassic World star revealed she was not surprised when one of her movies end up flopping.
“You can always see it coming while you’re making it,” Howard said in an interview with The Independent. “I’ve never been shocked when something doesn’t work. But I’m just an actor – you’re there to serve a director’s vision.”
She continued, “If a movie doesn’t turn out the way that you envisioned, you can barely feel disappointed because it’s not yours. You’re not the person who’s building the thing.”
Last year, Howard starred in the Apple film Argylle, in which she played spy novelist Elly Conway. The film had an estimated budget of $200M, and its current box office is just over $96M. In 2006, Howard starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s fantasy thriller Lady in the Water, the filmmaker’s follow-up to the successful The Village, which Howard also starred in. The thriller had a budget of $70M and made $18M in its opening weekend with a total box office of a little over $72M.
Although Howard is able to understand when a film doesn’t do well, her father, Ron Howard, has broken down emotionally when one of his movies doesn’t get a positive response from the audience.
“It blows him away that I don’t do that,” Howard added.
Howard recalled when the Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman period drama Far and Away flopped in 1999, her father turned to Clint Eastwood for advice.
“He said, ‘Ronnie – a career is like a season of television,” Howard said. “You’ve got 24 episodes, some of the episodes are going to be bad, some are going to be serviceable, maybe a little forgettable, and maybe five of those episodes are going to be really strong and last.’”
