Billy Ray Cyrus has his daughter Miley Cyrus in his corner after going public with his romance with actress Elizabeth Hurley.
The Hannah Montana alum, 32, spoke about her father’s love life, while also highlighting her mother Tish Cyrus’ marriage to actor Dominic Purcell in an interview with The New York Times published on May 30.
“Now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too – I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,” Miley told the outlet. “I’m being an adult about it.”
Although the “Party in the U.S.A.” singer admitted it was initially “hard” accepting the new family dynamic, she eventually came to terms with it and embraced the change.
“Because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, ‘Yes, that’s your dad, but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.’ My child self has caught up,” she explained.
Miley has come a long way in her relationship with her parents following their 2022 divorce after 28 years of marriage. Billy Ray, 63, and Tish, 58, share five children: sons Trace Cyrus, 36, Braison Cyrus, 30, and daughters Brandi, 38, Miley and Noah Cyrus, 25.
Miley’s estrangement from her father dates back to August 2023, when her mother Tish married Dominic, 55. Miley attended the wedding alongside her siblings Brandi and Trace, while Braison and Noah chose not to attend.
In another public show of support, Miley brought Tish, Brandi and her boyfriend, Maxx Morando, as her dates to the 2024 Grammy Awards. After winning Record of the Year for “Flowers,” the Tennessee native thanked members of her team, her “mommy,” Brandi, Maxx, 26, but noticeably didn’t mention her father.
“Thank you all so much,” she jokingly added before pausing and giving a shrug. “I don’t think I forgot anyone, but I might’ve forgotten underwear. Bye!”
Miley spoke about her strained relationship with the “Achy Breaky Heart” artist in a June 2024 interview on David Letterman‘s Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.
“I’m grateful for being able to watch him ahead of me. He’s almost given me this map. And there’s a map of what to do and what not to do, and he’s guided me on both,” the “Adore You” singer said about how she’s looked at her father’s career while forging her own path.
“Honestly, my mom is my hero,” Miley went on to gush about Tish, adding she was raised primarily by her mother.
Sources exclusively told In Touch in January that Billy Ray was hoping to repair his relationship with his daughter, saying, “All he wants this year is to get Miley back in his life,” and that he was having a hard time accepting that their estrangement could be permanent.
“It’s pretty heartbreaking for Billy Ray because Miley has totally cut him off and has even been talking about what a great year she had in 2024, as though this feud with her dad didn’t even upset her,” the source added. “He’s completely depressed over the situation and worried that if he can’t break through to her soon, they might end up estranged forever.”
