Netflix has given a Season 2 pickup to Ransom Canyon, its freshman romantic western drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly.

The news comes more than two months after the 10-episode first season of the series, an adaptation of Jodi Thomas’ books, was released. At the time, a Season 2 writers room, led by executive producer/showrunner April Blair, was already up and running. Filming on the new season is eying a September start, I hear. Set in Texas Hill Country, Ransom Canyon films in New Mexico, with production set to return to Netflix Studios Albuquerque where Season 1 was based.

“I couldn’t be happier that Netflix is ready to get back in the saddle for Ransom Canyon!,” Blair said. “Our dreamy little corner of Texas Hill Country is full of stories still untold, and we can’t wait to bring them to our incredible fans. Get ready for another ride.”

In addition to Duhamel and Kelly, Season 1 starred James Brolin, Eoin Macken, Lizzy Greene, Andrew Liner, Garrett Wareing, Jack Schumacher, and Marianly Tejada. With the exception of Brolin, whose character arc ended, the rest of the actors are poised to return for Season 2 as Ransom Canyon is set to cast a new character that was introduced at the end of the Season 1 finale, Yancy’s (Schumacher) wife.

Only seen from the back of her head, she mystery woman was portrayed by Erica Dasher, star of Blair’s Freeform series Jane by Design, who was visiting the set. Blair told Deadline in April that Dasher’s condition for serving as a stand-in was to get a chance to audition foe the role.

“Now that we’re in the room on season two, it’s a very fun character that’s shaping up and a very juicy backstory,” Blair teased at the time.

Ransom Canyon, part of Netflix’s “comfort entertainment” suite of series that also includes Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, The Lincoln Lawyer, and My Life with the Walter Boys, revolves around three Texas Hill Country ranching family dynasties locked in a contest for control of the land, and their lives and legacies are threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life.

Ransom Canyon Season 1 spent four weeks in the Global Top 10 TV (English) list and reached Top 10 TV in 77 countries. Blair executive produces the series with Dan Angel and Duhamel. The Season 1 writing team included Blair, Joe Fazzio, Paul Haapaniemi, Laura Nava, and Lucas Rojas; their scripts were directed by Amanda Marsalis, David McWhirter, Meera Menon, and Michael Offer.
